Presbyterians ordain ‘first’ female minister

After almost a century and a half of cooperation between the Scottish and Canadian Presbyterian churches in Trinidad, further ties were developed last Sunday with the ordination of the first female Scottish Presbyterian minister at the Susamachar church.

Deaconess Denyse Ella Rattansingh was ordained by Presbyterian Moderator, Rev Elvis Elahie, in the presence of Rev Garwell Bacchus, local Moderator of the Church of Scotland.

The relationship between both churches began in 1868, when Rev. John Morton came to Trinidad from Canada to start the Presbyterian mission. On arrival he found the Scottish Presbyterians already had a church in San Fernando, and since then a direct relationship started.
