Larkhall’s St Machan’s Parish Church was packed to overflowing into the church hall for the funeral of the Rev William Downie last Thursday.
Some 800 mourners heard tributes to his ministry and public life by church and military leaders.
The Rev John Arthur, past moderator of the United Reformed Church in Scotland, and group captain Steven Brereton-Martin, chairman of the RAF Regiment Association, praised his “fearless and wise counsel” and said he would be sorely missed.
The Rev Alistair McKillop, who conducted the thanksgiving service, said he was “a wee man with a big heart” who gave himself wholeheartedly to the community where he was well-known and knew everyone.
