Ambitious plans for a £1.3 million church hall and community centre have been lodged with Perth and Kinross Council this week by the Congregational Board of Auchterarder Parish Church.
The existing church hall at the rear of the 102-year-old Listed church off Auchterarder’s High Street has served local people well over the decades, but is now inadequate to meet the demands of the growing church and community, while its facilities also require considerable upgrading to comply with modern legislation.
“Our proposals are for a new church hall with a large reception area and three or four community rooms off that, and the existing hall will probably become a youth centre,” explained Auchterarder Parish Church session clerk Alex McKendrick.
“The whole ethos of the project is to make it available to the community at large and to make it modern so people who are not of the Christian faith will feel comfortable.
“It will be an active hub for the youth of the town and a focal point for the many activities within the community.”
Mr McKendrick quoted words from Proverbs – “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children” – and added: “The people of Auchterarder 100 years ago left us a very beautiful church and an excellent inheritance and that is what we are aiming to do.”
