The composer James MacMillan doesn’t always express himself diplomatically, but in an article for the Scottish Catholic Observer he is careful only to hint at what many of us suspect: that the Scottish Catholics bishops have scarcely lifted a finger to implement the Pope’s decree liberating the traditional Latin Mass, writes Damian Thompson.
Cardinal O’Brien, Archbishop Conti and Bishop Tartaglia may be impeccably orthodox, but when it comes to organising celebrations of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass they show about as much enthusiasm as uber-liberal Kieran Conry.
It’s not fair and it’s not right, and now MacMillan has gone into print on the subject, comparing the different situations in Scotland and England.
Yes, time for action. By the bishops of Scotland. And quickly, before the Pope arrives in Britain and finds that Summorum Pontificum doesn’t apply north of the border.
