24-hour casino critics raise stakes 0

Church and licensing leaders have hit out at a move to allow another city casino to open its doors 24 hours a day.

The £25 million Alea Casino at Glasgow’s Springfield Quay became the latest venue to operate round the clock As reported in Saturday’s Evening Times, Scotland’s biggest casino went 24/7 yesterday.

Now senior church figures and the boss of the city’s licensing board have condemned the move towards all-day opening.

Gorbals minister Rev Ian Galloway, convener of the Church of Scotland’s Church and Society Council, said the Church is against casinos opening 24 hours.

He said: “We have a particular concern for the many people who struggle with the addiction of gambling and the effect it has on their families.

“It is an activity in which there are very many losers and few winners and it does nothing for the economy other than provide low paid jobs."
